Ashfield ![]() The Superintendent of South Ashfield Heights Apartment building. He lives in room #105. He's the father of James Sunderland. ![]() James Sunderland Name Meaning: James (English, "holder of the heel" or "supplanter"), Sunderland (English, "Land separated, divided, parted.") Born in 1964, he was born and raised in Ashfield with his father Frank, who worked as the landlord of South Ashfield Heights Apartments. Later in his life and met and married Mary Shepherd and kept a job as a clerk. While on a vacation in Silent Hill, Mary falls in love with Silent Hill and wants to come back. Suddenly she came down with an incurable disease and she spent most of her time in a hospital, the disease made her become a very angry person because she thought she was ugly, she wanted James to hate her but he loved her and hated her. When she visited home, James (29) suffocated her, to put her out of her misery. He returned to Silent Hill with Mary, but suffered a mental breakdown - living in a state of delusion. Truly believing his wife had died of the illness and that he had recieved a letter from her, he searched the town. Slowly, he began to realize his mistake and brought himself back to reality - with a bit of help from the power of Silent Hill. The fate of James is still unsolved. Clues from Frank Sunderland himself mention that James and Mary disappeared years ago. So its believed that James took Mary's body from where he had lain it, placed it in his car, and drove it into the Toluca Lake - drowning himself with Mary's body. It is also suggested that James carried out a forbidden ritual to resurrect Mary. Creator's comment: In the initial stages of the scenario, the two characters we had were "Joseph" and "James." The name Joseph was borrowed from a man suspected of being "Jack the Ripper," (James Maybrick) so James was derived from that. ![]() Mary Shepherd-Sunderland Name Meaning: Mary (English, "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child", "beloved") She is was born in 1968 to Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd (quite possibly the same Shepherds of Shepherd's Glen). Later in her life, she meets and falls in love with James and they marry. On their hunnymoon, they take a trip to Silent Hill and rent room #312 at the Lakeside Hotel. She falls in love with the town and hopes to return. After the trip, the housewife became ill with with an incurable disease and has to spend most of her time at Ashfield hospital. There she becomes friends with Laura and even wanted to adopt her. The disease made her become a very angry person because she believes she is ugly. This makes her want James to hate her, but instead he loved yet and hated her. When she visited home in 1993, James suffocated her, to put her out of her misery. Creator's comment: Her name is taken from the victim Mary Kelly in the "Jack the Ripper" case, who was living with the suspect Joseph as detailed in case files regarding the murders. James' realization of the crime he has committed affects the story's conclusion, as well as the dialogue that transpires. It is conceivable that Mary's death three years ago is merely James' delusion. ![]() Laura Name Meaning: Laura ("laurel") She is an 8 year old (1994) patient at the same hospital of Mary Shepard-Sunderland. The two became close friends and Mary wanted to adopt her when they both left the hospital, but Mary died just a few days after Laura's birthday. That week, she left their nurse Rachael a birthday letter for Laura, which Laura stole and took to Silent Hill with her in search of Mary. Being an Innocent, she cannot see the monsters and the 'other world' side of Silent Hill. She simply wanders around the town looking for Mary and picking on James as she goes. Understanably so, she dislikes James for leaving Mary alone and making her sad. That may very well be the reason for her bratty behavior towards him. But after she discovers James had killed Mary, she leaves. To return to Ashfield Hospital? Her fate is still unknown. She can play the piano and she loves bears. She would be 21 currently. Creator's comment: Her name is taken from the nonfiction work No Language But a Cry by Richard D'Ambrosio. "The story of a child called Laura was the worst case Dr Richard D'Ambrosio had ever encountered. As a toddler she had been held in a frying pan and horribly burned. At 12 years old she was labelled schizophrenic and housed in a gloomy institution run by Catholic nuns. Scarred physically and emotionally, she had never spoken a word. But one Sister believed she could speak - if they could find someone to unlock the terrifying memories that kept her mute. That person was Dr D'Ambrosio. This is the story of professional skill and human courage, he records his rescue of that little girl. Of all the characters, she is the only one who does not hold any darkness in her heart. It may be that she came to Silent Hill looking for Mary. To her the town appears to be normal; she does not see any monsters, nor does she see Maria." ![]() Robert "Bobby" Randolph Name Meaning: Bobby (English "bright fame") Randolph (English "rim of a shield" "wolf") Tarot Card: "The High Priestess" 21 Sacraments: Ten Hearts Bobby (18) had just graduated from High School.
